The One Man Town

The One Man Town

At an outback pub in Queensland
as the steam train waited by
filling up with coal and water
(for the track ahead was dry)
we were drinking better liquid
pots of ice cold Queensland beer
while the publican assured us,
"Southerners are welcome here.
Drink it up and have another,
in the keg there's plenty more."
So we gargled and he told us
how he also owned the store,
ran the bank and was postmaster
of the tine office there,
took bets of all the shearers,
in his spare time cut their hair.
We'd whiled away a pleasant hour
when a form appeared and roared
"Finish up! I drive the engine
and it's time you were aboard."
Quite calm the publican advised us,
"Pay no heed, he must be new.
The train won't leave until I say so,
I'm the station master too!"
